Before you make any decisions, attend this workshop. Adoption 101 sessions sell out consistently - please register early for this first step.

Come to AFABC, network with other families, learn about your options and key issues in adoption. 
Topics include: Adoption Today in BC, BC's Waiting Child Program, Local Infant Adoption, International Adoption, Homestudies, Grief and Loss, Attachment, Openness and your next steps.

Waiting Child Information Sessions

Free information session for families considering adopting a child in foster care with the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).  Learn what you need to know before you start the adoption process.  Presented by MCFD and the AFABC.  These workshops cover The Adoption Journey, Preparing For the Journey, Who are BC's Waiting Children, The Process and Questions and Answers.

Come to AFABC and learn to create healthy parent/child attachments in your adoptive family. Attend our updated, two part series on theory and practical strategies. A great workshop for both pre or post-adoptive families.

Building Skills for Transracial Parenting


If you are parenting a child of a different race/culture or you are considering transracial adoption, these Saturday workshops are for you.

AFABC's new video "Colourful Lives - Voices of Transracial Adoptees" is a highlight of both workshops.

Workshop ONE: Motivation to adopt transracially, Family Identity/ Sharing Family Stories, Culture and Heritage, Talking to Your Kids, Ages and Stages, Being your Child's Best Ally.
Workshop TWO:  Stereotypes, Your Child's Positive Racial Identity, School Issues, Dealign with Racism, Panel of Transracially Adopted Youth and Adults.

Adoption Education Program - Training Enhancement Sessions

The goals of the project are to provide a higher level of support to families in the MCFD adoption process; to provide opportunities for applicants to get to know other potential and experienced adoptive families via regularly scheduled conference calls; to increase the learning opportunities for families by offering facilitated discussions regarding contemporary adoption issues; to encourage networking between families with similar geographical challenges; to better equip adoptive parents with realistic expectations of adopting children with special needs.

Teens & Tweens: Adopt an Older Child

Are you interested in adopting a teen or pre-teen? 400 teens are available for adoption in BC. Join us for this two-day workshop and hear from a panel of teen adoptees and their families. This workshop is open to families with completed homestudies who are registered with MCFD or a licensed agency.

Safe Babies
A series of workshops for all waiting parents

If you are waiting to adopt an infant, locally or internationally, the Safe Baby workshops are designed for you, especially if there is a risk that your new baby will have been exposed to drugs or alcohol during pregnancy. These workshops are open to all families registered with adoption agencies and to families adopting via the MCFD.

As well as learning about substance and alcohol exposure, you will gain valuable, practical knowledge on infant development, support services for parents, sleep issues and babies, household safety, infant safety, self care, and a host of invaluable topics for new adoptive parents. The workshops will feature speakers from infant development and public health programs, FASD and substance exposure specialists.

Infant and child CPR included! Last session was a sell-out! Register early to avoid disappointment.

 Try Being Me For A Day

Our children’s physical environments are often stimulating and exciting. But what if our children are unable to filter out those stimuli? The Adoptive Families Association of BC and the Shuswap Family Resource Centre invite you to join us for this unique workshop.

Parents, professionals and caregivers experience how it feels to be a child who struggles with learning and behavior challenges through a series of activities to simulate what these children experience.

This workshop will inspire you to try new ways to help your child learn, increase their self esteem, and better understand their behaviors and motivations.

  • A 20% cancellation charge will be applied to fee-for-service events if done up to 2 days before the event.
  • Late cancellations (48 hours or less prior to the event) are non-refundable.
  • If AFABC cancels a session, a full refund will apply.
  • You may cancel by phone, fax email or in person


     

    Accessibility

    AFABC will make arrangements to ensure that our members have the support and information that they need. Our workshops can be held downstairs in our Burnaby office. Please call ahead so that arrangements can be made to accomodate you.
