What services does AFABC provide?

AFABC provides province-wide support and advice if you are beginning to think about adoption, if you have decided to adopt, and if you have already had a child or children join your family. AFABC also plays a significant role in promoting awareness of the thousands of BC children in the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development, who are waiting for a family. Click here to learn more about our programs.

Is AFABC an adoption agency?

No, AFABC does not arrange adoptions. In BC, only licensed adoption agencies can do this.

How did AFABC start?

AFABC began around a kitchen table in 1977 by a small group of adoptive parents to share ideas, information, and support. Back then, there was not much information available about adoption, and it was a subject that was "kept quiet." These families realized that silence did not help their children or themselves. They meet regularly and put out a newsletter. Within a couple of years, The Adoptive Parents Association of BC was formed. In 1989, the BC Government provided seed funding, and an office was established in Surrey, BC. Telephone support was provided, support groups were formed, the newsletter was produced, and family events were held. AFABC now has staff and volunteers province-wide, and approximately 1,000 members.

How is AFABC funded?

AFABC is funded in a number of ways: through a contract with the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development, through the donations of our corporate and community partners, through membership dollars, and through member donations.
