All our award nominees are recognized for the significant contribution they have made to adoption, pre- and post-adoptive families and children, and the AFABC. 

And the winners are...

Adoption in Action Award Recognizes a BC business or organization that offers excellent adoption benefits.

BC Public Services provides employees with 7 weeks pre-adoption leave, during which the employee is entitled to 85 per cent of salary for the duration of the pre-adoption leave.
Nominees: HSBC, IBM, Ernst & Young
HSBC Bank Canada provides $5,000 adoption benefit for every child that joins a family through adoption.
IBM provides $4,000 adoption benefit for every child that joins a family through adoption.
Ernst & Young provides $10,000 adoption benefit for every child that joins a family through adoption.

The Spirit Award – Individual Recognizes an individual who has made a significant and meaningful in cash or in kind donation.

Ron Sombilon has been a proud supporter of AFABC for over 4 years. Ron is always ready to help in any way possible and is always ready to give new ideas of ways to increase our fundraising dollars. For the past 2 years he has created original art pieces for our Wine, Jazz and Family Fun Day events, and tailored them with our sponsors’ logos. The time and effort Ron puts into helping AFABC is priceless. His dedication is truly valued.

Jeff has been an active committee member for both Jazz and Wine, as well as a dedicated event sponsor.

Acknowledges the dedication, hard work and outstanding contribution of a volunteer.
LEAH BUCHHOLZ & LEA HARPER
The Dynamic Duo these two girls have been volunteers for four years. Both have written for the magazine, are passionate about adoption education for families and adoptee support. Leah formed a support group for Korean adoptees and is a speaker on panels, helps with play playshops, adoptee events, an AFABC video consultant and a workshop presenter. Lea is also a speaker on panels, helps with playshops, adoptee events, and was a participant in the Colourful Lives video and a workshop presenter.

Violet Rose
contributed to the fall letter campaign and Focus Magazine, and was a volunteer at our Jazz event.

Tania has sat on the Jazz and Wine committees and has always taken a proactive role in helping us in anyway possible. Tania is a true superstar volunteer!
Kevin was an integral part of the silent auction team. Not only did he volunteer his time for prepping for the event, he also dedicated over 14 hours at the event.
Laurie and her team at DLO Move and Support Services has gone above and beyond with their volunteer efforts for Wine on the Mountain.
Miles was a committee member/lead for Jazz musicians and he provided full Musical Direction for the Jazz event.
Lyn has organized and facilitated the single parent support group since the fall of 2004.
Tanya has been involved with Akoma for over eight years and was also involved as an informal consultant for AFABC’s True Colours Mentoring Program, has been a mentor to new adoptive families, and is an ACC parent liaison for BC.

 
The Spirit Award – Corporate
Recognizes an organization or business that has made a significant in cash or in kind donation.
GROUSE MOUNTAIN
Jenny Alexander is our Wine superstar! This is the 4th year Jenny and Grouse have supported AFABC. Each year, Grouse generously donates their beautiful chalet for us to host our annual Wine Event and each year they surprise us and offer more and more help. Jenny is always there for us when she is needed, whether it is a quick question or a crazy request. Jenny is patient, caring and helpful. We would not be able to pull off our amazing Wine on the Mountain event without Jenny and Grouse Mountain.

Deloitte and Touche LLP have chosen AFABC to be part of their National Impact Day where employees devote an entire day calling our donors and volunteers to say “thank you” on our behalf.
Ethical Bean has provided ongoing support as a true partner for AFABC including Family Blend coffee sales, awareness, event sponsorship, as well as coffee donated to education sessions as thank you gifts.
HY Louie created major adoption awareness for November in their stores, ads in their flyers, Family Blend sales of $1 was donated, and they let us be present in their stores with adopt info tables throughout BC.
Vancouver Fire Fighters have been provided event sponsorship, event volunteer support, and the VERY popular live auction item “Fire in the Kitchen,” which is exclusive to Jazz.

 
Helen Mark Excellence in Adoption Award
This lifetime achievement award recognizes an outstanding contribution to children and families and to adoption in BC.
JAN LUTKE
Jan is the Senior Consultant for FASD Connections. She has been a foster and adoptive parent for 37 years, has adopted 12 children with a diagnosis within FASD and is a tireless advocate for individuals with FASD and their families. Jan has developed and written material on FASD, and is published by both the University of Washington Press and the University of Alaska Press. Jan has been providing education, training, consultation and support to a wide range of professional agencies, organizations, and groups across North America for the past 20 years.
