All our award nominees are recognized for the significant contribution they have made to adoption, pre- and post-adoptive families and children, and the AFABC. 

And the winners are...


Christine Little accepting the Adoption in Action Award on behalf of Ernst & Young from AFABC Board of Director and Award Committee Chair Susi Proudman. Christine is an employee of Ernst & Young and an adoptive parent.

Adoption in Action Award
Recognizes a BC business or organization that offers excellent adoption benefits.

Ernst & Young
Ernst & Young offer an adoption-assistance program to help defray the costs associated with the adoption process. They cover expenses of up to $10,000 per child, and the benefits apply for each adoption a family undertakes. Costs eligible for reimbursement include: legal and placement fees; medical expenses for the birth mother or child prior to adoption; transportation costs for the child and adoptive parents.

Nominees: HSBC, IBM

HSBC Bank Canada provides a $5,000 adoption benefit for every child that joins a family through adoption.

IBM provides a $4,000 adoption benefit for every child that joins a family through adoption.

Acknowledges the dedication, hard work and outstanding contribution of a volunteer.

Tania Elvin
Tania has been an outstanding volunteer for the past few of years working directly with Financial Development on our signature fundraising events. Tania has sat on both the Jazz and the Wine committees and has always taken a proactive role in helping us in anyway possible. For Wine 2009, Tania called hundreds of prospective attendees and personally drove around and distributed hundreds of flyers and posters. She also acts as a team leader at our events; supervising a number of other volunteers, making her an integral person at our events. Tania is a true superstar volunteer.

Nominees: Lyn Mogren, Liane Lowden

Lyn is an exceptional addition to AFABC. She has been the facilitator of the Single Parent Adoption Support Group for the past six years. Her leadership, enthusiasm and desire to help other people is a quality that AFABC treasures.

Liane has been a dedicated and outstanding volunteer for the past three years. She always has a smile on her face whether she is helping to sell Christmas trees in the freezing cold, attending to our guests at our signature events, or helping out at the office. Her kind nature and smiling face always spreads adoption cheer.

Helen Mark Excellence in Adoption Award
This lifetime achievement award recognizes an outstanding contribution to children and families and to adoption in BC.

Lex Reynolds (1955 - 2009)
Lex Reynolds was an adoptive father, lawyer and child and family advocate who was instrumental in forming the BC Adoption Act as it is today. His life was dedicated to creating changes within the adoption community. He advocated for the most disadvantaged children, youth and families within the child welfare and justice systems, serving many First Nations people who would otherwise have had no representation, often working for little or no pay. Lex volunteered hundreds of hours each year working with boards and staff of various adoption associations, including being the board president for AFABC from 1994-1995. He was instrumental in spearheading the Adoption Council of Canada’s efforts to obtain $3 million dollars to set up the BC Adoption & Permanency Trust Fund, which was established in 2004.


The Spirit Award – Corporate
Recognizes an organization or business that has made a significant in cash or in kind donation to AFABC.

HSBC
HSBC has been an outstanding supporter of the AFABC, providing us with a total of $50,000 in recent years through their Futures First program. HSBC’s outstanding financial support of AFABC’s A Family for Every Child program has made them an adoption champion.

Nominees: John Hardie Mitchell Family Foundation, Scotiabank, Vancouver Firefighters, Raymond James

John Hardie Mitchell Family Foundation has been an incredible supporter of AFABC for five years in a row. They request nothing in return for their substantial donations. Their dedication to the wellbeing of children and to AFABC is exemplary.

Scotiabank has been the presenting partner for Jazz in the Park for the past five years. Scotiabank is an integral part of our fundraising efforts, they not only donate, they also provide us with their staff for the event evening.

Vancouver Fire Fighters have provided event sponsorship, event volunteer support, and the VERY popular live auction item “Fire in the Kitchen.”

Raymond James has been the presenting partner for Wine on the Mountain since its inception. They have demonstrated commitment and loyalty to AFABC.
