The Adoptive Families Association of BC is pleased to offer The Adoption Channel -  live and interactive, online education for the adoption community in British Columbia. Airing on select Thursdays every month, the Adoption Channel provides more of the information and education that the adoption community already receives from AFABC.  Come learn with us!

Attachment Series
If you are interested in creating and maintaining healthy parent/child attachments in your adoptive family, this webinar series is for you. Learn about secure and insecure attachments, trauma, grief and loss, transitions and more. Take away some new ideas, practical skills and strategies to build success in your family.

Part One: Attachment and Adoption

Parents will be introduced to the concept of attachment, the attachment cycle and how a child's early experiences with caregivers, and multiple placements can impact their belief system and how they respond in relationships with others. New adoptive parents will gain a better understanding of their children's reactions and behaviours.

Part Two: Attachment and Trauma

Focuses on the impact of trauma and the recovery process for children. Adoptive parents will learn to identify some of the symptoms that children present with when they have experienced trauma and how it impacts their development and attachment process with family.

Part Three: Attachment Strategies
Twelve strategies for promoting secure attachment. These specific ideas and practical skills will assist new adoptive parents in creating a nurturing and embracing family environment. This live webinar will include questions from the on-line audience.

Adopting through the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD)? Considering the process? Join us for a webinar on Post Adoption Assistance. PAA offers a variety of services to support families who adopt through the Waiting Child Program in B.C. Learn what you need to know before you adopt - including services offered, maintenance support payments, qualifications, eligibility, and exceptions.

Laughter and Tears in the First Year
They laughed, they cried - it became a part of them. Robin, an adoptive mother of two boys, tells the very real story of her family’s first year after adopting an older child. Her younger son joined her family at 7 yrs old, after spending over 5 years in multiple foster homes in BC. Robin shares her stories and insights - bringing a mix of emotion, good humor and wisdom to her account of what was the most challenging and rewarding year of their lives. Learned during their “crash course in extreme parenting,” Robin shares the twelve significant lessons her adoptive family has learned to live by.

Transitioning Children Into Adoption webinar series
Foster and adoptive parents all have key roles in successfully preparing and transitioning children and youth from foster care into adoption. If you are a foster parent or a prospective adoptive parent, this two-part webinar series is for you! 

Part One: The Process
Learn about the critical roles of both foster and adoptive parents throughout the transition process from the moment the child is registered for adoption to the final adoption decree in British Columbia. Includes the roles of various social workers, and the foster and adoptive parents during the adoption process. This live webinar will include questions from the online audience.

Part Two: A Transition Toolkit
Learn practical strategies and tools for foster parents and adoptive parents to engage in a partnership to support the adoptee to settle more positively into their new family. This live webinar will include questions from the online audience.

Support and Strategies for Substance-Exposed Children series
Professional Speaker Series
AFABC and Jan Radford invite you to a two-part webinar series “Support & Strategies for Substance-Exposed Children”. In part one, participants will gain valuable knowledge about the impact of various substances on the developing fetus. Part two provides real world ideas for supporting children impacted by prenatal exposure. Jan Radford is an RN with extensive experience in this area, an adoptive mom to four children and a foster parent for the past 10 years.

Adoption and classroom success: Beyond the basics
Professional Speaker Series
Join us for a discussion with Heather T. Forbes, LCSW, on how to help your child succeed at school. Circumstances prior to adoption often cause adopted children to experience school, among other things, in a different framework than other kids. Orphanage care, foster care or prenatal exposure are all events that can affect behavior as a child grows.

Heather presents tips and strategies on how to help your child be more successful at school, therefore easing some of the stress at home.

  • How to smooth school related transitions
  • Helping teachers understand what is driving a child's negative behaviors
  • How to increase your child's motivation to succeed at school
